Amateurism in Web 2.0

by maverickis on October 28, 2005

Nicholas Carr’s article on the amorality of Web 2.0 says that the promoters of Web 2.0

venerate the amateur and distrust the professional.

But he does not define amateur and professional in this context. Because the paradigm of news media is changing it may be appropriate to say that a professional in the established broadcast media is not a professional on the web.

Is it possible that we are the same stage as at the beginning of the scientific revolution? Science was begun by gifted amateurs and has its own share of magicians, charlatans and mischief makers.

The amateurs turned into professionals when they demonstrated that their results had the capacity to change the society they lived in. Its the same with the web.
